How we do things – the nuts and bolts
Our aim is to support you as completely as possible in your learning, so when we put together a package tailored for you we will talk about:
- Face-to-face sessions
- E-mail coaching
- Mind Opener Activities
- Telephone tutorials
- 80/20 Lingo Boxes
- Get the Know-how Workshop
Face-to-face sessions: the time that your tutor spends with you.
E-mail coaching: tasks set by your tutor that you e-mail in for correction,
also your chance to ask questions and seek help via e-mail between face-to-face sessions.
Mind Opener Activities: information and activities to complete which are e-mailed to you before your first face-to-face session. The idea behind Mind Openers is just that; they are designed to open your mind to certain things about your chosen language, such as:
- words which English and the target language have in common
- The numbers 0-9, knowledge of which enables you to give your telephone number
- The sounds of the target language
Mind Opener Activities prepare you for your course, both in terms of practical information and in terms of confidence building, because before you even start you will be able to say a few things about yourself in your chosen language
Telephone tutorials: you phone your tutor by prior arrangement and cover a
pre-agreed task.
80/20 Lingo Boxes: these boxes form the basis of your personal learning system. At the beginning of your course you will be shown how to use them. They provide you with an effective and enjoyable way of moving information from short to long-term memory.
Get the Know-how Workshop: our one-day workshop, designed to:
- Give you techniques to improve your memory
- Help you understand, and combat, the effects of stress on the mind-body
- Offer you alternative and brain-friendly ways to record and review information
Get the Know-how sets you up for your language course; the insights it gives will help you learn anything at all with ease and pleasure, so you can imagine how useful it is to Get the Know-how.
E-mail coaching: We have found that business people gain great benefit from this service. If you are often out of the office, contact via e-mail offers a way of maintaining the momentum of your learning. This facility gives you the opportunity to send, and get feedback on, two e-mails for every face-to-face session.
Telephone tutorials last up to half-an-hour and cover such topics as:
- Recognising questions words – Question and Answer activity during which you are asked for information such as name, company name, phone number.
- Telling the time (12-hour clock); role play in which you arrive in reception, identify yourself and give reason for your visit (“I have an appointment at (time) with (person)…”).
- Telling the time (24-hour clock) – Question and Answer activity asking for departure times of trains/flights. Role play: booking a ticket.
- Hotel – vocabulary check. Role play: booking a room.
- Practising a call to a company abroad – identifying self, leaving name and contact details for return call.
