80/20 STRESS-FREE LEARNING

What is 80/20 Stress-free Learning?

To cover the second part: it is learning with no stress. No big deal? Well, actually, very big deal. We accept stress as part of our daily lives. Think about it. We assume that things will be stressful, particularly in the work place, so we tacitly accept that we will, at some point and to a greater or lesser extent, suffer from stress. But it’s unlikely that we realise the full extent of the impact that stress can have on us. Prolonged stress is very debilitating. But here we need to confine ourselves to the effect that stress has on learning. If you’re stressed not only don’t you learn, you cannot learn. Stress stops you learning!
If you would like to know more about what happens to your brain when you’re stressed click here for information about Get the Know-how.

So what happens if learning itself is stressful?
The simple answer is - you don’t learn.

Why should we perceive learning as stressful?
For any number of reasons, some of which you will relate to:

  • Thinking that the subject will be difficult
  • Embarrassment
  • Feeling vulnerable
  • Boredom – feeling the material has no value for you
  • Previous bad experience in a learning situation
  • All these feelings put us in the wrong place to be able to learn.

We all function better when we’re at ease and attentive so the obvious way to make learning truly effective is to make it relaxed, enjoyable and stimulating – in short, to take the stress away.

How do we take the stress away?

When we set out to learn something we start from a lack of knowledge. Obvious, or what? Well, no. Think about the words: lack of knowledge. If someone is found lacking they are perceived to be inadequate, they didn’t have what it takes to make the grade. Think of the other side of the coin and the expression “Knowledge is power”. With our admitted lack of knowledge we are not in charge, we are not in control. So on an unconscious level we can feel vulnerable before the class or course even starts. This sensation of vulnerability can be reinforced by embarrassment. If we are part of a group, especially if the group is comprised of our colleagues, we don’t want to make a fool of ourselves – this is a particularly British trait. Then there’s competition – we tend to measure ourselves against other people. This spirit of competition is inherent from school days and professional hierarchies, and sometimes even our individual natures. Sometimes it can stimulate us to greater effort and be a positive force, at other times it can work against us, acting as a disincentive. If we perceive someone as better than us at something we may feel that it would be safer to simply give up because we’ll never be as good as “X” and we don’t want to be seen as a failure – we won’t risk it!

So, knowing this and before you even start your course, we:

  • Pique your interest in the subject
  • Build up your confidence by showing you you can do it!
  • Help you understand a bit about how your brain works so you can work with your brain rather than against it
  • Involve you in your learning process
  • Only then does the face-to-face training start!

And where does the 80/20 come in?
Well, if you’re relaxed you learn easily – you get…
80% of the benefit for 20% of the effort!

80/20 Stress-free Learning bringing you the benefits of learning that is:

  • Enjoyable
  • Easy
  • Accessible
  • Rewarding
  •

If you’ve struggled to learn in the past consider this! Could it be that you bring a sense of defeat to learning that may stem from previous negative experiences? Is that little voice whispering to you: It’s too difficult. You won’t be any good at it. Why are you bothering? How do you silence that little voice? You prove it wrong right from the start.

You don’t speak a word of German but before your face-to-face course even begins you will be able to count from 0-9 and give your phone number.
